The glasses from the 3D printer

Contents

Many components of glasses are now produced using the 3D printing process

The first glasses were made in Italy in the late 13th Century (between 1270 and 1290), the glasses as such can already look back on more than 700 years of history. However, it should be noted that the early glasses were exclusively reading glasses for the correction of (mostly age-related) farsightedness. The possibility of correcting short-sightedness with glasses, on the other hand, has only been known since 1520 at the earliest.

Despite this long tradition, the production of individually tailored glasses still represents a technical challenge, even in the industrial age.

After all, it is not just necessary to grind the lenses according to the required number of diopters. Rather, the glasses frame must also fit exactly to the nose and face shape of the respective wearer. Not an easy task for a mass production facility. Especially since there is also the fact that the community of solidarity of the legally insured must bear the costs.

3D printing technology facilitates the manufacture of all the components of the glasses

So what could be more obvious than to use 3D printing technology as much as possible in eyewear production? A process that is almost predestined for the production of individual parts or small series. And at an economically justifiable expense.

The first attempts at 3D printing of glasses began in 2009, and additive processes have long since become indispensable in the production of glasses.

We at 3D Activation, your professional 3D printing service from Wiesbaden and Thun/Switzerland, not only made glasses frames, but complete glasses. And that includes glasses and hinges, depending on the customer’s wishes. However, the lenses themselves are not additively manufactured, so the production of the glasses can be seen as a hybrid model. Of course, we are by no means limited to cash register frames, but we are happy to print models for you that correspond to the glasses trend.

In addition, we are also happy to assist you with your request for an individualized one sunglasses helpful. After all, this is not just a question of design, but also of comfort. Because sunglasses don’t have to be adapted to the wearer’s eyes, but they should sit comfortably on the bridge of the nose. With mass-produced sunglasses, however, this is often just a matter of luck.
