Agustin Flowalistik, the low-poly 3D artist

jv05j96sAgustin Flowalistik is an Argentine designer specialized in 3D printing. Despite his South American roots, he has close ties to France as he also lives in Paris. He is best known for his low-poly style Pokemon creations. Agustin shows great creativity, which is reflected in his different types of 3D creations. His path to 3D printing has a humorous background, as he tells us:

“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved building and then destroying things. Now that I’m an adult, 3D printing allows me to continue this behavior. Just a little more professional!”

In terms of his sources of inspiration, Agustin counts two different phases in his career so far. Initially he was inspired by geek culture and his designs were inspired by video games from the gaming world. After that, he increasingly turned to concrete designs of everyday life.

“I now work on more functional creations and draw my inspiration from everyday problems….Before I start designing, I think about how I can improve my surroundings. Once I find a satisfactory solution, I start drawing a 3D model on the computer.”

As with his inspiration, Agustin Flowalistik counts two phases when using software for 3D modeling. First he learned how to use the 3DS Max program and later switched to Autodesk Fusion 360.

“First of all, I modeled in 3Ds Max because it was my teacher Oscar’s favorite program. This is how I created my low-poly creations. I don’t think it’s the best program for 3D printing because it’s more focused on animation and rendering. So it was a big challenge for me to learn how to model! After that I switched to Autodesk Fusion 3D because it was pretty easy to use and because it has all the necessary tools to create functional objects. The next program on my list to learn is ZBrush!”

It may not be Christmas yet, but Agustin treated himself by getting the latest Ultimaker 3 3D printer. With regard to the printer settings, however, patience is still the word.

“I now own an Ultimaker 3 with a dual nozzle system. I then choose the right print settings to optimize material usage and the final rendering. At the moment I’m not looking at the print time, which can sometimes take a long time. I love printing with a layer thickness of 0.15mm, which takes a long time but is very precise. But I’m still trying out different layer thicknesses.”

When mentioning his favorite creation, it is the nostalgia that speaks more than the technical satisfaction or timeliness of the project!

“My favorite design is definitely my low-poly Shiggy. It was my first creation and also the first Pokemon I played. Like 3D printing, Shiggy was the start of an incredible adventure. But of course my goal is to work hard to create projects that will become my new favorite design.”
