3D printed large format deer by artist Paco Raphael

Paco Raphael

Paco Raphael is a visual art artist from Amsterdam. His latest creations are life-size deer in different colors. He used 3D printing technology to create these extraordinary large format deer. With his idea of producing deer using 3D printing, he combines art design with industrial production – two fields that couldn’t be more different in the traditional sense. The result, however, is as simple as it is fascinating.

From Photoshop to canvas painting

Paco Raphael got his start after graduating in 2004 in Media and Design from the University of Communications of The Hague. After joining, he worked for several years as a graphic designer for various agencies. Paco also creates digital collages from scanned images of big cities, deals with typography, fashion and edits erotic images on Photoshop.

One of his trademarks is that he then post-processes the edited images by hand. He calls this step “digital meets analogue”. When he had the chance to exhibit his work at the Amsterdam Art Fair in 2008, it sold out in no time. This gave him the incentive to pursue his personal art career.

In 2011, he was inspired by a wildlife documentary when he saw a deer give birth. “This animal was so pure, so gentle, so noble. Wouldn’t it be nice if I could put the deer in a dynamic city like New York, expand it and put it in a neon color? This led to a series of pop art collages. I fleshed it out and made them in five different versions with different deer in different cities,” says Paco.

From canvas to 3D printer

The next big step in Paco’s career was the path to 3D printing. After his deer motif was very well received, he decided to convert it into 3D. With the help of a 3D designer and the ZBrush program, he was able to use the computer mouse to form a deer out of a digital lump of plasticine.

Once the 3D model was complete, he contacted several 3D printing service companies who were able to bring the model to life. i.materialise achieved the best result because they were able to print the deer in large format. The 3D printing method behind it is the SLA process. The resin used, which hardens with UV radiation, enables a particularly smooth surface, which is advantageous when finishing with paint sprays.
