Lesson 6- ZOOM Window

Use the Window option of Zoom to see a selected area of your drawing displayed at a larger magnification.

  • pick two corner points to define a box (window) around the area to be enlarged on-screen.
  • the area inside the specified window is displayed at the highest magnification that will fit in your AutoCAD drawing window.

Command: ZOOM
Specify corner of window, enter a scale factor (nX or nXP), or [All/Center/Dynamic/Extents/Previous/Scale/Window] <real time>: W
Specify first corner: (pick near P1)

Specify opposite corner: (pick near P2)

Command:

You can pick two corner points for the desired window at the first Zoom prompt to use the Window option.

  • it is not necessary to explicitly select the Window option.
  • you can also invoke Zoom by typing Z as the command alias for Zoom on the command line.

PRACTICE WITH ZOOM WINDOW

  1. Launch AutoCAD (if required). Pick File + Open and select the T102_1.dwg drawing file in your personal folder. Close all other drawings (if other drawings are open).
  2. Pick View + Zoom + Window and follow the dialogue below to zoom in for a closer view of one room in this drawing.

Command: ZOOM
Specify corner of window, enter a scale factor (nX or nXP), or [All/Center/Dynamic/Extents/Previous/Scale/Window] <real time>: W
Specify first corner: (pick near P1)

Specify opposite corner: (pick near P2)

Command:

Now you see an area of the drawing that was inside your specified window and it is displayed at a higher magnification.

  • illustrations in this manual may show drawings in separateindows rather than showing the entire AutoCAD window.
  • this format requires less space in the manual but still serves to show the display magnification relative to the screen size.
  • drawings may be maximized in your AutoCAD window instead which will lead to slightly different displays on your screen.

3- Enter Z on the command line as a command alias to invoke Zoom. Then pick near P1 and P2 as the corners of the zoom window to zoom into the doorway as shown below.

  • Command: ZOOM
Specify corner of window, enter a scale factor (nX or nXP), or [All/Center/Dynamic/Extents/Previous/Scale/Window] <real time>: W
Specify first corner: (pick near P1)

Specify opposite corner: (pick near P2)

    Command:

Note :
The ARC of this doorway appears (on-screen) to be made from LINE segments but this door would Plot as a perfectly smooth ARC.

  • use AutoCAD Help for the Viewres command to learn how to improve the appearance of ARCs & CIRCLEs on-screen.

You can also use the Regen command to regenerate the current display on-screen and make ARCs & CIRCLEs appear smooth.

  • AutoCAD optimizes the appearance of objects for the current display magnification when you use Regen.

4- Remain in this drawing for the next exercise.
