Fusion 360 – a complete solution for additive design

The American software group Autodesk offers a variety of CAD solutions for architects, engineers and designers. One of the best-known programs is AutoCAD, which is basically suitable for the design of 3D models, but focuses more on 2D modeling in terms of functionality. For this reason, Autodesk has presented other solutions that are more geared towards the construction of 3D models and are therefore better suited for use in additive manufacturing. These include Autodesk Inventor and Fusion 360. As a cloud-optimized application, the latter not only offers CAD (Computer Aided Design), but also CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) tools. The software facilitates the product development and optimization process, especially for use in 3D printing. What features does the program offer?

The integration of CAD, CAM and CAE tools provides users with a platform for designing, optimizing and also manufacturing components or products. Basically, the entire process is combined in one software environment. Fusion 360 is good for designing 3D technical models. However, many users criticize that the program lacks sculpting tools for organic modeling. CAD solutions such as Blender or Rhino offer more extensive functionalities for constructions in this regard.

Fusion 360: What features does the design software offer?

A big plus are the export options of Fusion 360. Although designs are primarily stored in the cloud, 3D printers or slicer-friendly file formats such as STL or OBJ can be output. In addition, the program offers the flexibility to choose between parametric modeling, free-form construction, surface modeling or mesh modeling and then to assemble assemblies. Industrial designers can thus use the wide range of tools to integrate function, aesthetics and manufacturability during product development.

The cloud-based approach makes it easier for engineers and designers to work together in the development process. However, Fusion 360 also offers the possibility to share projects with customers or suppliers and thus centralize project activities.

Fusion 360: Optimized for 3D printing

One of the great advantages of additive manufacturing is the freedom of design. For complex “organic” models, the necessary tools must therefore be available in the CAD program in order to implement the requirements. Fusion 360 has such capabilities built in to generatively design and optimize conventional parts. For example, new, weight-reduced designs can be presented that are optimized for the respective additive manufacturing technology or whose performance has been improved. After the actual design process, the part simulation feature can be used to validate the improved design. The latter is also an important factor in additive manufacturing to reduce prototyping costs.

Fusion 360 is relatively new to the market and opinions vary when it comes to ease of use. Some functions are very advanced, others not so much (e.g. organic modelling). For the beginner, the basic functions are relatively easy to learn and for the design of mechanical components, it offers the necessary functions to simplify the development process. In addition, Autodesk and the users operate an online platform where help, documentation and tutorials are offered.

Costs and Licensing

A 30-day trial version is offered for the Autodesk Fusion 360 program. After expiration, a special free license for startups (< 10 employees and < $100,000 annual revenue, limited to 1 year) or a commercial license be acquired.
