Placing Doors in Curtain Walls

Placing Doors in Curtain Walls
How to add doors in curtain walls.

Curtain walls are a type of wall, but they are a different kind of wall family. Curtain walls are not the same as a Basic Wall or a Stacked Wall system family. For example, curtain walls cannot host standard doors or windows. Instead, to add a door to a curtain wall, you must swap out a curtain wall panel for a door panel.

In order to place a door in a curtain wall, you need to have a door family that was built from a curtain wall panel template so that it will understand how to adjust when the panel size changes. The Revit component library already has several of these door families.

To load a door panel family, on the Insert ribbon, in the Load From Library panel, click Load Family. Revit displays the Load Family dialog. Navigate to the Doors folder. Here, there are multiple curtain wall door panel families. Each family name begins with curtain wall. For example: Curtain Wall Dbl Glass, Curtain Wall Sgl Glass, and Curtain Wall-Store Front-Dbl. (If you are working in the metric file, these are similar, but begin with the letter M.) When you select one of these doors, you will see a Preview image. Choose Curtain Wall Dbl Glass, and then click Open.

There is no tool to place a curtain panel directly. Instead, you must select an existing panel and then change the type in the Type Selector. Move the cursor near the edge of the curtain wall panel you want to change and press TAB until the panel highlights. In the Status bar, you can see when the panel is highlighted. Then click to select the panel. Now, in the Type Selector, you can see the panel type that is selected. Expand the Type Selector and choose the Curtain Wall Dbl Glass door panel you just loaded.

The new door panel will fill the available grid space. You may need to add grid lines in tall panels if the door is too big. You may also need to remove the mullion at the sill of the door.

When you select the door panel, the Properties palette will show that this element is identified as a door, and it will be included in door schedules. The instance properties for the Width and Height are unavailable, indicating that they are read-only, because these dimensions are determined by the host curtain wall grids.

Click Edit Type to display the Type Properties dialog. You can change the Offset parameter to move the door panel a specific distance from the center of the curtain wall. For example, change this value to 0. When you click OK, the panel moves inward.
