AU 2016 Video: AutoCAD Macros and Cheese – An Automation Feast – AutoCAD Blog

One of the many great things about AutoCAD is the ability to customize it for your own preferences and workflows.

In the Autodesk University 2016 “Macro and Cheese: An Automation Feast” recorded session, Autodesk’s Volker Cocco takes an in-depth look at how to build AutoCAD macros, which can automate processes in as little as one step and reduce the amount of time you spend on repetitive tasks.

“Macros provide a method for customizing AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT (as well as AutoCAD platform vertical applications) without having to learn a programming language,” Cocco explains. “Basically, a macro is nothing more than a series of commands and their options written into a string of text for repeated use…Macros can be as simple as calling a single command, setting a system variable, or contain a complex series of commands and settings.

“Why and when should one use macros?” he continues. “The bottom line is that you don’t have to, but if you want to maximize productivity and minimize redundant tasks then you should start thinking about automating your tasks using macros. My thoughts are that if I perform a task three times, it’s time to automate that task.”
