3D Activation prints PA plastic dress for London designer Alexa Chan

For every 3D printing service, the 3D printing orders with a particular glamor factor undoubtedly include all print orders from the fashion sector. After all, fashion from the 3D printer fascinates people in a special way.

In particular, the Swabian fashion label Marc Cain, the Munich designer Pia Hinze and the Czech shoe designer Lenka Markova have been customers of 3D Activation so far (namely in the years 2013/14). In the case of the 3 3D printed skirts for Marc Cain, we from 3D Activation even received the silver award in the 3D printed products category, on which print stars 2014 in Stuttgart (we reported).

“ENKÉPHALOS” as a symbolic connection between old and new

Alexa Chan, currently a master’s student at the London College of Fashion, used our 3D printing service in 2014 to have a white dress made of PA plastic. Under the name “ENKÉPHALOS”, Chan’s design project was based on the idea of designing each individual dress individually. At the same time, natural materials such as silk or wool should be elegantly combined with such a “technical” material as nylon (a variant of PA plastic). So Alexa Chan’s ENKÉPHALOS was to present a marriage of old and new, as a reminder of what was lost on the one hand, and a timeless symbol of Kartharsis and quiet optimism on the other.

News about fashion from the 3D printerIncidentally, Alexa Chan’s “ENKÉPHALOS” was photographically documented by the Austrian art photographer Anja Aichinger. Aichinger, born in Salzburg in March 1978, has been living and working (like Alexa Chan) in London for several years, where she has already impressed with independent art and exhibition projects, for example in November/December 2015 with the Ireland exhibition “The Odyssey “.

Selective laser sintering enables precise and stable 3D models

The 3D printing process of selective laser sintering (also known as SLS 3D printing) used for the creation of “ENKÉPHALOS” consisted in the fact that the PA material, which was in powder form, was locally melted with the help of a laser beam, with this laser beam in the powder being exactly follows the structure specified in the CAD files, thus building up the 3D model layer by layer.
