The Bern business network is devoting an event to the topic of 3D printing at the headquarters of 3D Activation in Thun / Switzerland

BEOeco is a network of companies in the Swiss region Bernese Oberland, which is closely connected to innoBe, another Bern business network. Twice a year, BEOeco visits companies in the region to provide ideas and impulses at an event.

On May 20, 2014, it was also 3D Activation’s turn to host a BEOeco event. Under the title “3D printing from hype to reality”, an interested audience at the company headquarters in Thun, Moosweg 38A, was able to find out about the current trends in the field of 3D printing and the growing importance of this future technology, especially for the economic development of Switzerland. After a welcome by Susanne Huber from BEOeco and Markus Binggeli from innoBE AG, Wolf Hofer, the managing director of 3D Activation AG, presented our 3D printing service in a 50-minute presentation and also spoke about the current one under the program-giving title Status and perspectives of 3D printing technology.

Boy from South Sudan can eat with his own hands again thanks to 3D printing

Hofer opened his presentation with a moving film about the “Project Daniel”. This shows how a 14-year-old boy from South Sudan (Daniel), whose arms were destroyed by a bomb in November 2013, received movable prosthetic arms with the help of 3D printing. Thanks to these prostheses from the 3D printer, Daniel is now able to eat independently again.

Unexpected potential of 3D printing in the fields of architecture, industry and medicine

Following this film, Hofer led through the diverse application possibilities of 3D printing technology. Architects print models of houses, settlements or other objects on the 3D printer, and they do it quickly and at much cheaper prices than was the case with conventional model creation. Industrial customers use 3D printing technology to easily create prototypes, small series, samples or spare parts. Industrial designers use 3D printing to present their designs as illustrative models or as a means of presentation. On the other hand, the already presented medical 3D printing, which enables custom-made implants and prostheses, is only just beginning.
