3D Printing Award: 3D Activation prints Mozart Prize

On behalf of the Vienna Silver Manufactory, our 3D printing service produced the award for the Vienna Mozart Prize

On June 21, 2017, the “Vienna Mozart Prize for Enlightenment and New Ideas” was awarded for the first time. In the historic baroque vault of the Bösendorfer Hall in the Mozart House Vienna, a Wien Holding museum, this award went to Rudolf Buchbinder, a renowned pianist who also acts as director of the Grafenegg Festival. This award was initiated by the Mozarthaus Vienna, with the support of the City of Vienna’s cultural department.

The TV magazine “Seitenblicke” broadcast on ORF2 reported on this award ceremony in its issue of June 22, 8:05 p.m.

Responsible for the production of this innovatively designed prize, which is based on a design by the Viennese architect Gregor Eichinger goes back, drew the Vienna silver manufactory, on whose behalf we at 3D Activation were also able to make a decisive contribution to this project. In concrete terms, this means that we produced the award according to the plans of the Wiener Silbermanufaktur in brass 3D printing, which in turn took over the final silver refinement.

The path to brass printing leads via wax and plaster

At this point, a few words about brass 3D printing: Similar to the additive processing of silver, the construction of 3D models from brass works in a 2-stage process. First, a wax model is created using a 3D printing technology similar to stereolithography. To ensure optimal stability, supporting structures (support) are used, which are removed after the printing process is complete.

In the next step, a plaster cast is made from this model, which is then filled with the liquid metal and hardened.

In this case, the silver refinement as a post-treatment (finish) formed the conclusion.

The 3D printing award wants to promote the enlightened spirit of the Mozart era

The Mozart Prize, produced in this way and awarded for the first time in 2017, wants above all to enlightened thoughts of Mozart promote, which can also be found in his work. “‘The Vienna Mozart Prize for Enlightenment and New Ideas’ focuses on personalities who continue to critically continue the Enlightenment ideas from Mozart’s time and are committed to doing so. The award is a good opportunity to recognize achievements in art and culture in Vienna,” said Vienna City Councilor for Culture Andreas Mailath-Pokorny, who personally presented the award to Rudolf Buchbinder.

So we can be curious to see who will receive this honor in 2018.
