A 3D printed work of art produced by 3D Activation made it to Mount Everest

In our work as a 3D printing service, it rarely happens that a 3D printing project implemented for one of our customers literally goes around the world, even climbing the highest point on earth. The small but effective sculpture “Han’s Sausage” by the Hamburg artist Ruben Zickmann was granted exactly this stage for a certain time.

Encourage people to be creative

The aim of the artist was to encourage people to be creative with the sculpture Hans Wurst, to participate and to share the experience with others via a website. “The traveler,” says Zickmann, “becomes an actor himself and only has the basic idea of photographing the sculpture in its environment as a template, he is free to choose which scenery and action he experiences with the sculpture, only the photos or even a film then remain left and reports on the experience”. Especially in times of social media, this thought seems more relevant than ever, as it has never been so easy and at the same time popular to share photos or films with many other people.

However, Zickmann goes one step further: “It’s different when I set myself a task as a goal, then I try to reach the goal with the help of a second or even several people, it can be a trip to the highest point on earth or diving with great white sharks.” It says here spectacular in the foreground, so the motivation for capturing this scene on film or in an image is also somewhat different. “Since these are difficult tasks,” explains Zickmann, “I find it appealing to achieve them and receive a picture or film material as proof.”

In the first part of our series on Ruben Zickmann’s “Project Hans Wurst” we accompany his character to Mount Everest.

In the context of this pictorial documentation, the sculpture appears as a kind of “witness” of a successful summit conquest. Never before has an object printed by 3D Activation or even a 3D printed work of art made it to the supposedly highest peak on earth. (Minor caveat: in relation to the distance from the center of the earth, the 6310 meter high Chimborazo in Ecuador holds the record.)
